Are you worried you might have COVID-19?

Even if your symptoms are mild, you should be tested. The most common symptoms are:  

  • fever (or history of a fever)
  • cough   
  • sore throat   
  • shortness of breath  
  • runny nose  
  • fatigue
  • loss of taste or smell
  • diarrhoea
  • vomiting or nausea

If you are unwell with any of these symptoms, please visit your closest testing clinic straight away (see below for the list of West Moreton clinics that conduct testing for COVID-19).

Remember to stay 1.5m apart from other people in public and practice good hygiene by covering coughs and sneezes, and washing your hands thoroughly and regularly.

How will my pregnancy, birthing and baby be affected?

As at 4pm, 8 August 2021, visitor restrictions have eased. 

Up to 2 people may support a woman in labour as well as provide support at ante-natal and post-natal appointments.  

A support person can be any person providing care or support to a maternity patient. 

We understand you may be concerned about the safety of yourself and your baby. Please read the information below and know that our midwives are available 24 hours a day to answer any questions.

How can I contact a midwife in an emergency?

Phone the Maternity Day Assessment Unit midwife from 6.30 am - 10.30 pm on (07) 3810 1564 and from 10.30 pm – 6.30 am on (07) 3810 1242.

The midwife will advise you when to come to hospital.

Is it safe to have my baby at Ipswich hospital?

Ipswich Hospital is a safe place for you and your newborn. Staff are very careful about cleaning, hand washing and using protective gear to keep you and your baby safe. 

Should I cancel my usual check-ups?

No. It is very important that you continue to have your antenatal appointments.

There are several ways to continue your regular check-ups.

Speak with a midwife at the hospital on (07) 3810 1242 – or at a community clinic on (07) 3810 1310 – to find out which type of appointment is best for you and your baby.

We understand there may be situations that will need special consideration, so please speak with a staff member about your circumstances. 

What should I tell people wanting to visit me in hospital?

Babies are precious and we want to keep them safe. That is why we not allowing visitors in our Birth Suite, Maternity Ward and Special Care Nursery. 

Can my family send flowers, balloons or gifts to me in hospital?

We strongly encourage all gifts and flowers to be sent to your home address. This will limit the activity at the hospital as well as ensure that you get to enjoy these in your home environment as we aim to have you home as soon as possible.

Should I be worried about the COVID clinic being at the hospital?

The Ipswich Hospital COVID Clinic is located in a separate building to the hospital to keep people who may be contagious away from other areas of hospitals such as the birth suites and wards.

How will COVID-19 affect me?

It is expected that most pregnant women who get the virus will experience only mild or moderate cold/flu like symptoms. However, if you are also a smoker, have a heart or lung condition such as asthma, or other medical conditions, you may become more unwell than a pregnant woman who does not.  One of the symptoms of COVID-19 is fever. If you have a high fever at any stage of your pregnancy call your healthcare provider, midwife, or 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) as soon as possible.

How will COVID-19 affect my baby?

The risk of COVID-19 passing from mother to baby during pregnancy is thought to be low. So far, the virus has not been shown to pass from the mother to her baby before birth.

Is it safe to come to hospital?

Yes, it is safe for you and your birthing partner to come to hospital. Our birthing services, and special care nursery, will continue to be provided. To reduce the chance of you, your baby and the staff looking after you contracting COVID-19, our hospitals have changed the way care is provided in the below ways:

  • Providing care in the community rather than in the hospital
  • Offering care by telehealth, videoconference or phone
  • Limiting the number of support people and visitors coming into the hospital. Each hospital has different restrictions on visitors, talk to your midwife about your hospital’s visitor allowances.
  • Promoting hand hygiene, social distancing, and other infection control measures.

One of my family members has tested positive, what do I do now?

If you think you or a family member might have COVID-19, call your GP, 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) or speak with your midwife. Our midwives are available 24 hours a day for ongoing support. If you are concerned about your wellbeing, or your baby’s, we encourage you to contact your midwife or doctor.

Changes to Child Health Services

As part of our efforts to manage the spread of COVID-19, there are a number of temporary changes to appointments for Child Health Services. Please free call 1800 607 030 or phone (07) 3817 2340 for further information, or discuss appointment changes.

Infant feeding, and breast and bottle clinics are unchanged. Hearing clinics are still operating.

Women, Children and Family drop-in clinics continue to be held at Ipswich Health Plaza and Goodna Community Health Centre. No appointment is required to attend these clinics.

Clinic appointments are also available at Ipswich Health Plaza and Goodna Community Health Centre. Please continue to attend your appointment if it has not changed.

Appointments are still available at Boonah, Springfield Lakes, Ripley and Laidley Hospital.

Services have been temporarily suspended at Gatton Hospital.

FAQs for dental patients

What is the impact of COVID-19 on dental services at West Moreton Health?

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are currently restrictions on what dental treatment can be provided in both public and private dental clinics.

Why are these changes in place?

Dental equipment like drills used for fillings and ultrasonic scalers used for cleaning teeth, produce aerosols and require close and often prolonged contact between dental staff and patients. Aerosols present an infection risk as they are tiny droplets or sprays that contain saliva and blood. Strict management of aerosol-producing procedures in dental clinics reduces transmission risk. This, along with physical distancing requirements, means not all dental appointments can be offered at this stage.

I need dental care. Can I make an appointment?

Contact West Moreton Oral Health Service on 1300 300 850. Staff will be able to help with information about what services are available, where clinics are located, and how to put your name on a waiting list for routine care. You will be asked questions that will help our staff screen you for COVID-19 and other medical risks.

If you are not eligible for public dental services, you can find a local private dentist by visiting the Australian Dental Association’s Find a dentist online search tool www.ada.org.au/Find-a-Dentist.

My child needs dental care. Can I make an appointment?

Contact West Moreton Child and Adolescent Oral Health Services on 1300 763 246. Staff will be able to discuss your child’s needs and arrange treatment.

How can I find out if I am eligible for public dental care?

I have an appointment soon. Are there extra precautions in place?

Extra precautions are in place at dental clinics to ensure our patients and staff are as safe as possible. These include:

  • physical distancing in our waiting areas and clinic rooms

  • process for handwashing as patients enter our clinics

  • mouth rinse for all patients prior to commencing dental treatment

  • a phone call from one of our team members the business day prior to your appointment to confirm attendance and ask some COVID-19 questions.

If you are unwell, contact the clinic to reschedule your appointment. Do not attend your appointment if you are unwell.

Should I bring extra people with me to my appointment?

Wherever possible, please ensure that you attend appointments alone so that we can ensure physical distancing in our waiting rooms and clinics.

What happens to me if I’m waiting on a waiting list?

Patients currently on the waiting list will remain on the list. When services return to normal, patients will be contacted for an appointment when it is their turn.

Will my child’s Medicare CDBS benefit cap carry over if we can’t use it this year?

Children eligible for CDBS will have access to the benefit cap of $1000 over a two-calendar year period. The two-year period starts at the beginning of the calendar year in which your child (1) becomes eligible and (2) gets their first dental service. If you haven’t used the full $1000 in the first year, you can use it in the second year but only if your child remains eligible.

What if I have COVID-19 and I need emergency dental care?

If you have been issued a Self-isolation for Diagnosed Cases of COVID-19 Direction you must not leave the premises where you are self-isolating except (i) for the purposes of obtaining essential medical care or medical supplies, or (ii) in the event of an emergency situation.

Does COVID-19 damage teeth / gums?

The virus itself does not damage teeth or gums but not keeping up with regular brushing will. Eating well, drinking tap water and brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste are important even if you are unwell. For more information visit www.health.qld.gov.au/oralhealth/healthy_smile.

Specialist Outpatient Department appointments

The Specialist Outpatient Department (SOPD) at Ipswich Hospital is operating as normal. If you have a scheduled outpatient appointment you should attend this appointment. Patients who have scheduled appointments that are clinically suitable to be conducted via telehealth or telephone will be contacted by the SOPD team to provide details for this telehealth/phone appointment.

If you have any symptoms of COVID-19 on the day of your appointment, or if you have been asked to self-quarantine in the previous 14 days, please do not attend your appointment. Please phone 3810 1217 to reschedule your appointment.

To manage the spread of COVID-19, visitors are not permitted at any of our facilities so please attend your appointment by yourself, unless you require a support person to be in attendance or you are accompanying a child. Please bring your outpatient appointment letter and ID to assist staff who will be screening people at the front entrance at Ipswich Hospital. You will also be provided with a mask to wear before proceeding through to the Specialist Outpatient Department.
