Free dental care for children

Free dental care for childrenFree dental care is available for West Moreton children

Local parents have something extra to smile about – their children’s dental appointments with West Moreton Health are free.

West Moreton Health Acting Director of Oral Health Dr Kelly McGowan has asked parents and caregivers to keep an eye out at their children’s school for the Child and Adolescent Oral Health Service vans and register them for a free dental check-up.

The vans visit schools across West Moreton throughout the year and Dr McGowan said the most important thing was for parents to respond when an offer of treatment is made by visiting the West Moreton Health website and completing a form online.

“After that, parents just need to join their child for their first appointment to sign a consent form, have a chat about their child’s oral health history and meet our friendly team,” Dr McGowan said.

“We have a fantastic team that is focused on making sure children have a lovely experience.

“The service is geared towards small children so they can feel comfortable while seeing the dental team.

“We also do our best to see siblings at one appointment so it is convenient for parents or caregivers.”

Along with check-ups, West Moreton Oral Health also operates an Oral Health Education Van that teaches primary school children how to care for their mouths with the help of puppets, a paint station, Lego, and interactive dental apps on tablets.

Older children learn how to identify sugary foods and more about plaque and dental hygiene.

Dr McGowan said general check-ups, education and services like x-rays, cleaning, fillings and extractions were available with no out-of-pocket expenses to eligible patients and emergency treatment is also accessible at West Moreton Health’s community dental clinic in Ipswich.

“Keeping a healthy smile is more than just about teeth, it is an important part of general health,” Dr McGowan said.

“Starting oral hygiene habits early can help prevent illnesses like diabetes, respiratory conditions and heart disease later in life.”
