Free group helps support new parents

Helping new parents build a support network is the goal of a free parenting group operated by the region’s public hospital and health service, West Moreton Health.

At the Fourth Trimester parenting group, new parents are provided with evidence-based information on feeding, sleeping and infant development for babies aged up to 3 months.

Clinical Nurse Monica Vella said the structured five-week program was tailored to the needs of participants.

“There is so much information out there these days and not all of it is useful or relevant,” Ms Vella said.

“We provide information that is evidence-based and relevant to the families who attend our sessions.”

The program, which has run for five years, also introduces parents to other families in the area who have babies the same age.

“We encourage parents to network and they often remain in touch for years afterwards,” Ms Vella said.

Sessions are held weekly at two locations during school terms: Minka Place at Ripley Town Centre and Goodna Community Health Centre.

New parents and expecting parents can phone 1800 607 030 to register for the Fourth Trimester program.

West Moreton Health also holds baby clinics at Providence Community Centre, South Ripley; Springfield Central Child Health, Springfield Central Library; and Goodna Community Health Centre.
