Breastfeeding support available for West Moreton mums

The moment when a new mum reaches out for breastfeeding support is often a game changer, according to West Moreton Health Child Health Clinical Nurse Donna Long.

Ms Long is part of the Child Health Services team that provides lactation and feeding support for mums and bubs and said every woman needed encouragement and support to navigate the life-changing journey of parenthood.

“The arrival of a baby is one of life’s most mesmerising occasions,” Ms Long said.

“They bring so much joy and excitement, but they can also be a source of anxiety. After all, new parents are confronted with so many ‘firsts’ in such a short space of time.

“Breastfeeding can be an unfamiliar experience for new mums, and there are ways we can assist to ensure it is a happy and comfortable outcome for both mum and bub.

“If you have got questions, please don’t worry silently – we are here to help.”

As well as drop-in clinics and group education classes, the West Moreton Health lactation experts also offer home visits for those needing extra support.

Fernvale mum-of-three Tori Buhagiar said expert guidance made all the difference to her breastfeeding experience.

"I had breast surgery in 2006 and thought I couldn't breastfeed,” Ms Buhagiar said.

“With my first two children, I gave up too quickly. With my third infant, I have persisted and, with the help of my child health nurse, I am fully breastfeeding. I am so thankful.”

Chloe Brennan said encouragement and support from experts gave her the confidence she needed.

“I am a first-time mum and having child health support has helped me not be so scared," Ms Brennan said.

Ms Long said lactation consultants could help women to understand their baby’s positioning needs and feeding cues, dispel misconceptions around barriers to breastfeeding and offer advice on comfort aids.

“While breast feeding is a normal, natural phenomenon offering incredible health benefits for mums and bubs, it is also something that is learned,’’ Ms Long said. “There are no silly questions, and we would love to help you achieve a positive breastfeeding experience.”
