Multilingual Healthcare Rights Initiative

In line with our strategic priority to delivery equitable, person-centred care and support diverse and vulnerable communities, West Moreton Health (WMH) has developed a multilingual Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights poster. This poster will be displayed throughout our health facilities and services to improve access to health rights information. The aim of the multilingual poster is to improve access to and understanding of the Australian Charter of Health care Rights for all patients and consumers.

It is well recognised that people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds have differing understanding of health care and varying levels of health literacy. WMH is working to reduce barriers and improve access to health care by providing a culturally responsive, equitable health service through the implementation of the West Moreton Cultural Diversity Action Plan 2019-2021. WMH identified that three common languages spoken in the West Moreton region were not represented in the 19 translated Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights fact sheets. In response, WMH had the fact sheet translated into Dinka, Swahili and Samoan and these languages are represented on the multilingual poster. An acknowledgment to our traditional owners and custodians and promotion of the Human Rights Act 2019 (Qld) is also incorporated into the multilingual poster.

The goal is to encourages participatory health care decision-making, improves patient experience, clinical outcomes and effective use of resources in order to deliver equitable health care to our most vulnerable consumers.
