New service helping young people with substance use

An innovative new West Moreton Health service is providing support and treatment for young people struggling with substance use.

The first of its kind in the West Moreton region, the Youth Alcohol and Drug Service is available to people aged 12–25 who are worried about their use of alcohol or other substances.

Young people can simply walk into the service at Ipswich Health Plaza, contact it directly by phone or email, or obtain a referral.

Youth Alcohol and Drug Service Senior Social Worker Paul Woodward said the service was playing a valuable role in the West Moreton community.

“We’re very proud to be part of the region’s first free, walk-in alcohol and drug service specifically for young people, who often need tailored support that is quite different from adults,” Mr Woodward said.

“Young people have different experiences and challenges, so we’re here to support them at their pace with no pressure or judgement.

“We’ve already helped more than 100 young people in less than a year of operation and the demand for the service will only grow in the years ahead.

“Importantly, the service is also available to assist health professionals and community workers who might need specialist advice, support or education.”

Mr Woodward said the process for young people who needed support was straightforward.

“Once a young person makes contact with our service, our clinicians organise a phone chat to explain the support we can offer and talk through the patient’s situation,” he said.

“From there, we’ll discuss the treatment options and help create a plan for the next steps.

“We can provide an outreach service to meet young people in the community or at their home if appropriate. You can even bring along parents, partners or friends.

“Our aim is to support young people no matter where they are at with their use of alcohol and other drugs.”

West Moreton Health’s Youth Alcohol and Drug Service is located at Ipswich Health Plaza, 11 Bell Street, Ipswich (near Ipswich Train Station).

It is open from 8.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.
